The genealogy department has on microfilm all available Federal census records from 1790-1900 for the entire United States. Also has census from 1910 and 1920 for the states east of the Mississippi River plus Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Has Sound ex (census index on microfilm) for 1900, 1910 and 1920 for the southern states and Texas. No northern Soundexes and no Soundex for 1880 for any state. Has index books for most other census years for many states.

Other microfilm includes Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Records, some records of passengers into the Port of New Orleans, Census of the Five Civilized Tribes and other Native American records, assorted Baton Rouge newspapers from the 19th century, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for various towns in Louisiana, etc.

Collection includes over 10,000 books and bound periodicals. The south and east are emphasized. The midwest and north are less well covered, but well worth a look.

The genealogy department has a large microfilm reading room with 25 stations, a reader/printer that makes microfilm and fiche copies and three photocopiers.

The latest addition to the genealogy department is a Computer with a CD Rom. The computer setup was donated to the library on July 6, 1996 by the Cajun Clickers Computer Club. The CD collection includes census indexes, marriage indexes, Social Security Death Benefits Index, various land records, mortality schedules, tax lists, etc. This extensive collection of CD's is available for use on site. This has been a healthy addition to the library.

Classes for beginning genealogy are held every quarter. Check with the Library for date and time. Other programs are presented on a regular basis.
