What is a SIG?

What is a SIG? A CCCC Special Interest Group (SIG) forms when a group of members decide to meet regularly to advance their knowledge beyond what is offered in our workshops, and/or to work on specific projects together.  SIGs go deep into the inner workings of a topic of mutual interest.  Beginners may attend as observers but will not be allowed to bog down the sessions with beginners questions such as "How do you work this mouse?"

Our most popular SIGs at the moment include: (rev. 11/09)

Corel Draw SIG
Leader: Roger Carlyle

CorelDraw is a very powerful graphics design/desktop publishing program than can be used by both the professional graphic designers and the home PC novice alike. It can be used to design posters, newsletters, business cards, stationary, photo album pages, calendars -- just to mention a few. The first 30-60 minutes of each SIG meeting are devoted to learning the basic tools of CorelDraw. The second half of each SIG is devoted to a specific graphic design function. All meetings are held in the computer lab to provide hands-on realism for the participant. This SIG is for INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED CorelDRAW users. Students must attend at least three "Intro to CorelDRAW" workshops before signing up for the CorelDRAW SIG. It is highly recommended that Students in this SIG have CorelDRAW on their home or office PC.

The Corel Draw SIG created the interesting background on this page.

Digital Camera Club SIG
Leader: Robert Cook

I'd like to welcome all members of the CCCC to come to our digital camera club. It's an informal get-together for those who like photography and want to improve their techniques. I can hear it now, someone saying, "I don't know enough about cameras to understand what they're talking about!" Then rest assured, that's what this club is all about: asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning to get above the picture-taker level, and enjoying the hobby of photography.

Check the Calendar of Events for meeting days and times. And to add spice, you can bring a picture to compete with photos brought by other members. You can bring any picture to be critiqued, if you can't figure out why it didn't turn out right.

We're all still learning, so come to the meeting.

Digital Scrapbooking SIG
Leader: Marty Ducote
Digital Scrapbooking SIG's Webpage

Are you interested in scrapbooking? Whether you want to use your computer to assist you in creating scrapbook pages, or use your computer to create all-digital scrapbooks, we can help with ideas and techniques. Our very active special interest group has monthly meetings and an active mailing list. If you're interested, come to one of our SIG meetings — we usually meet on the third Saturday of each month.

Digital Video SIG
Leader: Walter Scott, Karen Morton
Digital Video SIG's Website
: http://smengineers.net/sig/sig.html
Are you interested in digital video? Do you want to make your own DVDs and VCDs, or learn how to edit your video on your computer? Trying to decide which camcorder is best? Would you like to learn more about different camera shots? Or how to light your video? Do you have old VHS tapes you'd like to convert to DVD? Each month we will discuss a different aspect of video on your computer. If you are interested in any aspect of video, this SIG is for you! We will cover a different topic each month, and also have an open question and answer session.

Genealogy with Family Tree Maker
Leader: Howard Merrill

Interested in Genealogy? Family Tree Maker is one of the most popular software packages for storing that mountain of genealogy data you collect. Meet with other users to brainstorm and learn some tips and tricks for making the most of Family Tree Maker, and to have all your questions about Family Tree Maker answered. For beginners through advanced computer users.

Hardware Repair SIG
Leaders: Ed Walker and Russ Williams

The Repair SIG is designed to demonstrate hardware analysis and testing through working with available systems. In addition, members are allowed to bring their personal systems for help in installing new hardware. If your system needs repair work, you may obtain permission from the instructor (prior to the SIG workshop) to bring a system for diagnosis. All efforts in the SIG workshop are shared for education. We do not accept liability for any system brought to the SIG workshop.

SIG Leader: Ed Walker

Leaders: Ed Richards, Joe Zachary & Will Hill
Linux SIG's Webpage and Linux SIG's Wiki

Linux is a free operating system, licensed under the GNU Public License. It is becoming increasingly popular both with businesses and home users. The source code is freely available to anyone who wants. If you want to find out more about installing and using Linux, this SIG is for you. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to advanced users, although beginners to computing may be somewhat overwhelmed. This SIG is conducted in conjunction with the Baton Rouge Linux Users Group.

Open Source SIG
Leaders: Ron Spruell/Cal Esneault
This SIG is focused on Open Source Applications which are cross-platform, that is they run on most operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, BSD). Each month, one or more programs will be discussed at an introductory level to encourage members to evaluate useful programs which can be downloaded at no cost. Depending upon SIG interest, a wide variety of application types will be covered (office programs, photo-editing, sound conversion, graphics programs, etc.).

Paint Shop Pro SIG
Leaders: Catherine Lorio and Debra Jones

This SIG is designed mostly for intermediate users.  Once or twice a year we will have a beginners class.
